I did not expect much from this place because my husband and I already have a favorite sushi place but I was impressed. We came in during lunch time and I highly recommend making a reservation especially on a weekend because they do get a lot of customers and they can only sit what looks like 15 people. I ordered the 4 hand roll set and a glass of white wine. The 4 hand roll set included BGB sake, negitoro, spicy tuna, and avocado. All were fresh and delicious. We ordered the Hotate crudo which had 4 pieces of scallop, orange, and ponzu. It was satisfying but it wasn't my favorite. We also ordered the bluefin chutoro sashimi - it was pretty good and I'd recommend this if you like sashimi. My husband and I ordered wine but they also have cocktails and you can bring your own bottle of wine but they just charge for corkage fee. We paid $120 for two sets of hand rolls, two glasses of wine, crudo, and sashimi. I'd say the price is as expected from a sushi place. Staff were friendly and the ambience was great. There is free street parking where we ended up parking but I think there is a small parking lot behind this place. Overall, I don't mind coming back here for their handrolls.
Found this place by accident which made it even more amazing. They didn't have seating (it's a very intimate spot) but we were able to get in after 15 min. In the meantime they recommended a cute little wine bar next door (also extremely pleasant) Ok now the food; I'll admit, my expectations were low so i ordered a simple three hand roll special.. the quality was so good, fresh and clean. And I the pops of flavors like little musical notes to my taste buds. You probably guessed I ordered more honestly I couldn't stop. Everything we had was just as consistent as the first bite. I was even eating the wasabi straight (don't judge ) Rico sauve will definitely be coming back with more friends.
My mom and I came here because they were offering 50% for first responders after hurricane Beryl. As a nurse, I was incredibly grateful for this promo and the appreciation they showed to people who had to work through the storm and its aftermath. I got the 5 handroll set and the ingredients were very fresh. I liked that the seaweed always stayed nice and crispy, giving a nice little crunch. Service was quick and efficient. I ordered the hotate and it was accidentally given to the couple next to me who ate it because they did not know it wasn't what they ordered. When their actual dish came out, they were confused and I politely chimed in to say that our order was given to the wrong people. The server was very apologetic about the situation and put in another order of hotate for us and it was prepared almost immediately. I've been to Handies about 3 times now (twice at their montrose location) and have always had a good experience and left with my belly full. This will remain high on my list of favorite places to eat at in Houston.
My go to. Can't never go wrong at handies! Great ambiance and fresh handrolls. Service was quick. You can still try to do walk-in when reservations are fully booked - pretty much all the time ive tried I was able to get seated! Start off with their 5 rolls combo, crudos, and try their specialty rolls!
Handies Douzo has been on my list for a while and I'm so glad I finally got to taste the hype! There is only street parking at this location but not too bad. Space inside is limited to bar seating only so reservations are needed for weekend dinners. We ended up getting the 5 Hand Roll set since we couldn't decide what to order and it was perfect to start with. The best roll from the set was BGB Sake. Kani was also good and crunchy. Spicy mayo was on the spicier side. The meat tasted very fresh and savory, this definitely my new favorite spot when it comes to hand rolls!
Delicious! What an experience! Superb friendly staff! I'd recommend coming here. Everything was fresh! The drinks were on point. Check out the photos with titles below. Bon appetite!
This. This is the place to go! Handies truly gives you quality, food and service. The food was so fresh and flavorful and the workers were very attentive and friendly. I came here for dinner and got the three hand roll set, sake crudo, and scallop crudo, and two additional handrolls, hamachi handroll and the kani handroll. Everything was super good quality and as a sushi connoisseur, I definitely recommend this place. Everything has such a good balance of flavor and texture.
Nestled in the Heights, Handies Douzo offers a curated selection of hand rolls and sashimi that exemplify the beauty of simplicity elevated to perfection. The limited menu may seem modest at first glance, but it's a testament to the founders' dedication to quality over quantity. Each item on the menu is a masterpiece in its own right, carefully crafted to showcase the freshness and flavor of the ingredients. The sashimi we had was fresh and bursting with flavor and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that speaks volumes about their freshness. Undoubtedly where Handies Douzo truly shines is the hand rolls. Each seemingly simple roll is a symphony of flavors and textures, meticulously balanced to tantalize the taste buds and leave a lasting impression. Their inviting atmosphere encourages patrons to linger and savor every bite. The waiting time is minimal, ensuring that everyone can indulge in their cravings without delay. We will undoubtedly be coming back for more!!
This place is a very cute date spot with decent food. The price is definitely on the higher end, but for a once in a while splurge, I would recommend it. All the seats circle the sushi bar, and it's a more personalized experience with the chefs and other customers. With regards to the hand rolls, we tried the Hamachi, Negitoro, and BGB Sake. I would rate those rolls in that order. They were all good, but the Hamachi was the best and was a nice surprise as we don't usually go for yellow tail when getting sushi. Outside of that, we also got the Maguro and Notorious BGB. The Maguro was good. The Notorious BGB was better in my opinion. For people who like a little spicy kick, I would recommend that one. If you do end up coming here, it seems to be only street parking, and I would definitely recommend grabbing a reservation as it fills up fast. We luckily got to walk in without one and got seats, but it is a small place.
My friend loves this place and when I went to visit her, we came here directly after she picked me up from the airport. We each got the 3 Hand Roll Set, which came with BGB Sake, Hamachi and Spicy Tuna. I also got a cocktail but can't remember what was in it. It was refreshing. Everything was fresh and I liked that the Spicy Tuna wasn't drowning in mayo. We were still hungry and ordered: Salmon sashimi: Salmon was marinated (Ponzu sauce?) and came with sliced radish which added some crunchiness. Bluefin Otoro sashimi: Melted in my mouth like butter. Santa Barbara Uni handroll: Creamy uni. Need I say more? Service was friendly and rolls and sashimi came out fast. I am so glad my friend introduced me to this place - I am a definitely a fan!
